  • 1988 40 hp VRO back firing

I'm having some issues with my 1988 40hp Johnson vro. It starts and idles fine. When I accelerate it starts back firing and will die unless I move the throttle back to idle. I removed and cleaned the carbs which were very clean inside and adjusted the floats. I squeeze the bulb while accelerating to see if that helps which doesn't help. I've also installed new plugs. Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Thanks

That's normally caused by having the throttle butterflies opening too soon... OR... having the linkage between the carburetors out of adjustment which causes the various butterflies to be out of synchronization.

Check that the butterflies are all in synchronization... opening and closing at the same time. Also make sure that the throttle butterflies just start to open when the scribe mark on the cam is dead center with the throttle roller... not before or after.

Thanks for the info Joe. I had actually thought about taking it to the shop tomorrow to have it checked out.
