  • Johnson 4 hp 4R79 Fuel Delivery Question

    Hey folks,

Brand new member, first time outboard owner, with a new-to-me 1979 Johnson 4 HP 4R79D.

Previous owner bypassed the fuel pump, and ran a fuel line directly from the on-board tank to the carburetor. Engine runs fine from idle to fairly high RPM (I've only had it in a barrel). and will run for well over an hour this way.

Know why they may have done this?

Is this a workable long-term solution?

What is the proper fuel routing? An OEM fuel pump "kit" includes a part (circled in red in photo) that I don't see on my outboard.

    Thanks for your help!

That 1979 4hp model DOES NOT come equipped with a fuel pump. The factory design and fuel system is a fuel line from the built in fuel tank filter directly to the carburetor.

The fuel pump is a add on kit, an accessory as you have pictured above. The part you have circled in RED is the fitting that would attach to the engine so that the hose from a portable fuel tank could connect with it.

Thanks for the quick reply Joe!

Attached is a photo of the pump that is mounted on the outboard now (not a very good overall view though).

If the original system doesn't require a pump, would the fuel pump be added only to pull from an aux tank? Any other benefit of an add-on pump?

      Thanks again

That's the only benefit... drawing from a larger portable tank.
