  • Trim Leak Down

J50PLEEA Johnson Power Trim Leak down. I tried replacing a couple o-rings, now cannot get trim to work at all. How do I bleed air out of trim?

  • #2
    The unit is self bleeding.

Have engine in full tilt position, fill reservoir, replace fill screw plug, raise and lower engine, repeat until reservoir no longer requires fluid.

If electric motor runs but the unit does not move, apply 7 to 12 pounds (No More Than 7 to 12) of air to the reservoir to force the fluid down to the oil pump.

      Put Air In Reservoir

How do I put air in the reservoir to force the fluid down to the oil pump?

Of course you'll need a air compressor of some kind. Cover the fill hole with a few layers of a rag. press the air nozzle against the rag, forcing the air through the rag into the reservoir. The rag serves as a seal of sorts to keep the rush of air and fluid from flying all over the place.

Thanks for the air tip. It didn't work but gave me an idea to force oil into unit with oil pump. The oil pump pressure caused the unit to start working. Thanks!

Very strange! It has always worked in the past 100%.

I don't understand your reply (above) that "it didn't work". The action of applying pressurized air to the reservoir is to force oil to the oil pump. As it stood, the oil pump would be just sitting there pumping air.

There is only one oil pump.... how did you manage to get that oil pump to pump oil to itself when it was air bound?
