  • Power Pack Replacement on 2001 Johnson 150HP

I have a 2001 Johnson 150HP, Model No. J150VXSIF, for which I order a replacement power pack for:

    Part ordered =
    0584985 PP&SHIELD AY.6V6 (BRP US, Inc.)
    Part received = 0584910 PP& SHIELD

After installing the replacement 0584910 power pack I noticed that the idle had increased 400 to 500 rpm. I connected a timing light to check things and found the new power pack timing at idle was at TDC. Timing specs state 6 degrees ATDC for idle (19/20 BTDC at WOT). I then removed the new power pack and reinstalled the old power pack 0584985, then double check with the timing light. Timing was back to normal at 6 degrees ATDC. I have an optical sensor test/timing tool, so I also checked optical sensor and found the sensor and timing settings to be correct per specifications. I am think that the new power pack is a replacement model, however, it appears that the replacement power pack 0584910 is not manufactured to the exact same specifications as the old power pack 0584985 model.

I know quick start will advance the timing until the motor warms up, so the above checks with the timing light was after the motor was warm.

Are there different timing setting for the 0584910 power pack, or is there a design flaw with this power pack.
