  • No water through pee hole 74 4hp

74 Johnson w/o service manual. Previously ran well, but not used for 2 years. Starts, but no water through pee hole even after 30 seconds. I have inspected entire shaft and no blockage found. Impeller looks good- no cracks, flexible, and no apparent deformity. Am in process of ordering new impeller since I know this one is old, but need to know how to identify thermostat and how to inspect entry to block and block exit. Starting in barrel and noted dead bees in water. Immediate thought mud daubers may be involved, but not sure they would enter block. Need help, want to use within 1 week. Currently have head off shaft.

Sitting for two years.... depending where the engine was sitting, bees and ants will take over that engine.

NOTE: When running in a barrel, the water must be 3 or 4 inches above the joint where the lower unit bolts up so as to submerge the water pump assembly.

From the head to the prop no obstruction found. How do I check out the block and thermostat? Shaft well submerged in barrel.

Shaft well submerged, entire lower assembly checks out as clear. How do I check out block and thermostat?

There is no water tell tale outlet (pee hole) in the 1974 4hp Johnson, nor is there a thermostat.

When the water pump is working properly, a water spray exits the small holes in the rear portion of the long exhaust housing between the powerhead and the lower unit.

Sitting for two years... that impeller surely has taken a set curvature... install a new water pump assembly.

To clean the block, remove the cylinder head and the exhaust baffle plate cover in order to clean out the water passages.

There is a hole beneath the back of the head that I could swear had a telltale on previous uses. I have no argument with replacing the impeller. If there is spray from holes on mid shaft, I won't worry about pee hole working. thanks
