  • Johnson 1995 50 hp maintenance

    Hello,

recently acquired a pontoon with what I believe is a 1995 Johnson 50 hp electric start 2stroke. the label was getting tough to read.

I need to begin regular maintenance and was wondering where I could find a manual for this thing..

I was hoping that there was a free .pdf download somewhere like I have found for my golf cart and 4-wheelers...

right now it runs great... just want to keep it that way..

    Thanks,

To order the proper manual, purchase it via eBay, whatever... you'll need the Model Number. What is that model number so that we know exactly what engine you have?

J50DTLEO = The "EO" stands for 95 (1995 50hp Johnson)... Just wanted to be sure that we (all of us) are on the same page.

If you're going to keep the engine for awhile... best to obtain a service manual that is specifically for that one engine... NOT one that covers an assortment of engines!

Clean and gap spark plugs, or replace... Check the compression... With all spark plugs removed, check to see that the spark will jump a 7/16" gap... Grease whatever grease fittings you can locate... Change the gearlube yearly. Fill from the bottom until it runs out the top oil level plug... A light coating of WD40 is good to fight corrosion, even on the powerhead itself... clean and grease the steering shaft... Inspect/replace the water pump every 2 or 3 years, sooner if need be (run through a sand bar, etc).

That'll get you started... the service manual will hint at other chores.

thanks for all the excellent information.

I don't suppose there is a link to a digital .pdf service manual out there somewhere?

or am I going to have to buy a hard copy of the service manual?

how much gear lube does one this size usually take? want to be sure I have enough when I go to winterize it.

it stays at the campground all winter and I have to borrow a trailer to pull it out of the water to service it...

          thanks again..

Unfortunately, if you want a service manual, you'll need to purchase one. Try eBay, you may get lucky and find one for a terrific price.
