I am installing the components into the gear case and having issue with clutch dog sliding over shift cradle. In the manual its says to put shift cradle in the slot, then slide the prop shaft with clutch dog in neutral over the shift cradle and line it up so shift cradle lines up to slot on clutch dog. I have tried this for about four hours and cannot get the clutch dog past or over this shift cradle. Any helop in ticks or advice would be great. My model number for this gear case or motor is J25RCOS

You state that the engine is a 1982 25hp model..... the Model number you state (J25RCOS) indicates the engine is a 1985 25hp model. The skeg is removable on the 1982 25hp lower unit...... The skeg on a 1985 25hp lower unit is not and is a thru prop exhaust type lower unit. If you are using a service manual for a 1982 25hp amd have a 1985 25hp, therein lies your problem as the two are as different as a dog & cat.

A special tool is needed to assemble the lower unit on the thru prop exhaust type lower unit. Get the specific factory service manual for the J25RCOS model only...... NOT some manual that includes a half dozen other models that will only confuse you.

I entered the incorrect year, the model number is correct and it is an 1985 year model.

I have not been able to find the specific book on it.
