  • 1977 55hp johnson

good morning peeps , im am new here so if i need to be corrected on anything please let me know . i bought a 1977 johnson 55 hp motor and replaced the impeller . i did this because at the command center ( the shift lever ) an alarm went off so to speak . online it said overheating . After installing the lower unit i have water coming out between the lower and upper housing where they connect and it didnt do that before .... there isnt a gasket that goes there is there ? And that alarm went off again with the new impeller. Thank for any advice , Jeff

Jeff... That's a common problem but it doesn't amount to anything. Normally it's sealed at the factory. Being a metal to metal surface (no gasket) water will escape there for awhile but will soon seal with marine debris.

If it bothers you, drop the unit 1/4" and seal it with the following sealer. After it drys, clean off the excess that squirts out sideways.

OMC Adhesive is now Bombardier 3M Product #847 and may be listed as Scotchgrip 847, part number 776964

1977 johnson 55 hp engine bogging @ full throttle

I tokk my boat out for the 1st time and the engine bogs down at full throttle . It did run at full throttle the very 1st time, but when i backed off and went full throttle again is when the bogging started and never quit.I put new plugs in and to no avail. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks , Jeff

If you have compression and spark that will jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP (check it)... it's fair to assume that one of the carburetors has had something drift into the high speed jet (clean it).
