  • Sticky Throttle, Won't Accelerate Past 2k RPM

Hello folks. I've got a 23 ft Pro Gator with a 90 Johnson on it circa 1993-ish. The boat and motor was my stepdad's for the past 15 years. Recently he gave me the boat because he doesn't fish much anymore. Before giving me the boat, he got a tune up done in which they replaced all old fuel lines, water pump, and some other odds and ends. I took the boat out to the lake on 5 separate occasions, which it cranked up nicely and ran like a dream. The 6th time I took the boat to Toledo Bend Reservoir to do some bass fishing and encountered some issues. The first issue I encountered was that the motor didn't want to crank. After about 20-30 minutes of foolin with it, I finally got it fired up. Next issue I encountered was this......the throttle felt sort of sticky, and the motor (regardless how far the throttle was pushed) would not accelerate over 2k RPM. The boat wouldn't get on plane and was essentially just putting around at a speed slightly over an idle with the bow sitting high off the water. I haven't taken it out since and I'm curious if I need to take it to a mechanic or just take it to the lake again and try it out.

Could be a fouled carburetor, sticking linkage, somebody playing games on you, etc.

How much time evolved between the time all was well and now... a few days, a month, more?

Note... having the engine crank or not crank means that the electric starter will or will not turn the flywheel over. It does not mean that the engine starts. Just in case that terminology needs clarifying.

Thanks for the clarification. There was about 2 weeks between it running great and running strange.
