The gear on my electric starter is stripped and needs replacing. I've searched for a thread or possibly a service manual to show me how to do it with no luck without buying the manual. Tried holding the gear itself and breaking the nut but shaft still moved so I left it alone so I didn't mess anything else up. Any info will be great Thanks in advance.

You can either dismantle the starter and put the steel field portion of the armature in a vice if all you have is a wrench... OR... simply remove the nut with a hand held air impact wrench.
If you're friendly with a automotive repair shop, ask them to do you a favor and remove the nut for you with one of their impact tools. Offer to take them fishing.
