  • 15 HP Outboard Powerpack/CDI

Hello, I am new to this but hopefully someone can help me. I have a 1992 Johnson 15 HP Outboard motor. (J15REMN) I have taken great care of it. I prime it, choke it and it starts first pull, two pulls at the most. It runs perfectly until I troll with it. Usually around 45 minutes after starting to troll, it stops running. It is then hard to start. I have changed the fuel, fuel hose, checked and fuel pump is still pumping. I have read articles: it could be the power pack/CDI, which I found are the same thing. I also read in the 1992 model the power pack is located in a location where it is affected by heat. This then causes the power pack/CDI to fail. There is suppose to be a conversion kit that can be purchased to relocate this power to eliminate this problem.
Can someone tell me what I need to purchase to do this repair. Do I buy the power pack only or power pack with a conversion kit. Either way could someone also help me with correct part numbers?
    thank you, Banditt

It's necessary to trouble shoot first!

Remove the spark plugs... do the electrode areas look identical? Describe. What make are the plugs... what type (number)?

Check the compression... What are the psi readings of the individual cylinders?

Check the spark... It should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame... a real SNAP! Does it?

If you have compression and proper spark when you encounter this problem, then obviously the problem is elsewhere.

Joe, thank you for your reply. I have been sent out of town to work and will be gone another week. I will get the motor out when I get home and do some checks and get back to you. thank you.
