I had a mechanic replace the lower unit a couple years ago with a used one, now that one is shot. I removed it and tried to take it apart, but that stalled when I couldn't get a stubborn snap ring out - After trying with needle nose first, I bought a pair of snap ring pliers that are too cheap, they flex the wrong way and don't pinch the snap ring enough to get it out.

Anyway, I did some research on the matter, and it seems more complicated than I'd like even if I could get the snap ring out and get to the gears. I'm looking at just replacing the lower unit because I don't want to buy all the parts only to learn I'm not capable of getting the job done - Never owned a boat prior and I've owned the boat 4 years now. i've done basic repairs (carb removal and clean, power pack replace, steering cable replace). I have a pretty good understanding of how the motor works, etc, but I'm far from a mechanic, just a guy that is good at figuring stuff out.

I've looked around online for a used lower unit, but really have no idea how to know for sure I'm getting one that matches my motor, and frankly for the cost of used LUs, I'd like to get a new one just to be sure it's good for a long while.

Should I just buy through my local dealer? Are they even available new or is the dealer just gonna sell me a refurbished LU? Should I go back to refurbing my old one?

    Any advice is appreciated.
