got a 99 Johnson 175 hp. when at idle for a time the carbs load up, when you advance the throttle it bogs down and dies. When you rev it up in neutral the gas can be advanced, the motor will then perform well. Mechanic says the vro is putting much oil when at idle. He wants to block off the vro and add oil in the tank. Carbs were just cleaned and vro is 2 yrs old Thanks in advance for info.

Bogging down when throttle is applied is usually caused by:

1 - Throttle butterflies opening too soon in relation to the timing. Butterflies should just start to open when the scribe mark on the cam is dead center with the throttle roller AND the idle timing is set to factory specifications (Manual).

2 - The high speed jets are fouled somewhat.

3 - The timer base under the flywheel is sticking (retarded spark).

If the VRO is adding too much oil, the engine should smoke like a commercial mosquito sprayer. Does your oil tank show an excessive oil usage as compared with past years?

When the engine is cold and is started it smokes a lot. Going to run it tomorrow and will post results later. thanks for the info. also I forgot to add that the first time the engine was run after the carbs were cleaned it performed well, the next day the problem began.

Could be debris breaking away from deteriorating fuel lines, some linkage slipping out of adjustment (throttle butterfly linkage between carbs), or of course what I mentioned previously.

However.... let me know in as much detailed info as possible how your engine performs on your venture as mentioned above.

when the motor is cold the engine is hard to start, as soon as it fires the starter kicks out Finally got it started after 8 or so tries. Got out of the marina. and ran about 3 miles @4000 rpm. shut it down and fished for an hour. Made 4 similar stops with minimal idiling .when warm the motor started quickly, motor performed well @ high rpm.
