  • 1982 9.9 Johnson not revving out

My 1982, 9.9 seemed to run fine when I bought a few years ago but I always thought it should go better. One day while out on the river I pulled the choke out and away it went, jumped up an plained.
I decided to have a look once home and it seems the throttle roller is sitting about 3mm off the cam and when throttle is twisted full to fast it only moves along cam about 20mm only just opening the butterfly.
Where should I start looking first. The twist throttle is a little tight but goes from stop the fast, I think lubicating might fix that.
Looking at YouTube videos the roller seems to run right the full length of the cam.

Normally the cam will run its full length ONLY when the engine is in forward gear, and at that point would have the throttle butterfly horizontal at full throttle. Check this out on the water when you have time.

Over the years, carburetors foul, gum, clog. Engaging the choke, and as a result of that, having the engine suddenly spurt to power indicates that fuel is not flowing thru the carburetor passageways properly. Clean and rebuild it as needed, being sure to clean the high speed jet that is screwed into the lower end of the upper body.
