    lower case

    I'm new and I hope I'm on the right forum. I'm looking at a used boat with a 1991 Johnson 48 hp SPL. I've been told by a Johnson/Evinrude mechanic to stay away from Johnson/Evinrude 40/50/60 hp 1988 thru 1992 models as they have severe lower case issues and the replacement,if you can find them,can be and will be extremely expensive. Any thoughts anybody? And no he is not trying to sell me one of his motors.

    Unfortunately that's right about the time period that I retired (1991) so I can't comment one way or the other on your question pertaining to the quality of the workmanship, design, or materials of the lower units you mention.

    However... keep in mind the saying that "Opinions are like a certain portion of our anatomy. Everybody has one and it usually stinks."

    If you're in no hurry, ask around a bit... other dealerships, various forums such as MarineEngine.com and iBoats.com.

      Thanks for the quick response,Joe. And thanks for the other web sites to check out. I feel the same way about opinions which is why I thought I'd do a little research.
