  • 5" Spacer for 2000 40HP Johnson/Evinrude

I'm looking for a spacer for a 2000 40 HP Johnson Model J40PLSSM. Bay Manufacturing used to make them, but their tooling wore out and there just isn't enough demand to retool. The spacer came in either kits 508 or 509, it is called a C-54 or 101054. The 509 kit fit 1993 to 2000 40 and 50 non-commercial Johnson/Evinrude outboards. The 508 kit was from 1989 to 1992 40, 48, and 50 HP non-commercial. If anyone knows of a source or maybe has one laying around and is looking to clear up some space I am interested in purchasing. Many thanks.

What is the spacer used for?

It is a 5" lower unit extension. From what I have gathered this outboard had completely different exhaust housings for the different shaft lengths vs some that OMC made a 5" extension housing for. I have the long shaft version, but the pontoon it is on is designed a little, well... let's say different, and the prop needs to be a bit deeper. Bay Manufacturing used to make a 5" extension, and apparently they are the only game in town if the OEM didn't produce a kit. They still make the internals, but not the spacer/housing extension. I have 2 other options as I see it. I can lower the motor pod, or add a bracket to the existing motor pod to allow me to lower the engine further in the water. Either way because of the design I have to move the outboard back for steering gear clearance. Taking off the lower unit (which I should replace the impeller anyway) and installing the extension would be so much easier.
