  • Johnson 2001 15Hp - Starter Pawl Not Reliably Engaging

    Hello All.

New member here from Brisbane, Australia.

I've recently bought a 3m poly boat and have been given, as a loaner, a seldom loved Johnson 2001 15Hp. First problem found is that the starter pawl does not reliably engage with the flywheel. It catches maybe 1 out of 50 attempts.

The manual rope start assembly has been removed and looks to be in good condition. The starter pawl did sometimes rock outward as required when the cord is pulled, but it certainly didn't occur all the time.

It was covered in gobs of grease. I cleaned it off and now the pawl seems to rock outward every time.

Is this really the fix - just make sure it is not lubricated?

    Good advice appreciated.

Most of those parts are plastic/nylon/whatever, and as such should not be lubricated as grease collects dirt and dirt causes jamming.

You have the right idea..... get that grease off of there. And if the guy that put all that grease on there ever shows up with any advice...................

Ignore him like he had the plague!
