    Johnson 2001 15HP - Flushing

    The more I work on this engine, the more I like it

    I'll soon be in a position to start it for the first time after installing a new throttle cable, new spark plugs, carby overhaul kit, fuel pump overhaul kit and water pump overhaul kit. I'll be using a large bin with the leg submerged in fresh water for the first start or two.

    But the Operator's Guide (found on the internet) is an interesting read. It describes flushing the outboard via the flushing port as shown in the attached pic. I was surprised to read this can be done with the engine running.

    This seems like a good idea and I'm sure Mr OMC knows more than me about such things. But how many use this strategy to flush their outboards after use?

      Hi Joe.

      I still wonder if using the flushing port is less or more effective than the traditional dunk in the big bucket flushing method.

      I like the idea of the water flow travelling downwards so gravity helps remove salt and crud. But the water pump will still be trying to generate flow upwards in the usual manner.

      Would you use the flush port method?

        The flushing port is actually a gimmick thing more or less as it does feed the water pump... BUT in doing so, adds a boost to the water flow via your local water department.

        Bottom line... yes, I'd use that flush port as it might just be the added boost needed to dislodge that chunk of mud/salt/whatever that the water pump just can't quite break free.
