took the boat out for the season today, the motor won't go down and the pump only runs with the switch in the up position. could it be a relay? how do i get the motor down manually?

To test the relays... simply switch them. If the problem is now reversed, a relay has failed.
There is normally a hole at the bottom side portion of the starboard transom bracket. Inside that hole is the manual release valve. Back it out NO MORE than two turns... that will let you drop the engine as far as the trim rams.
NOTE: It helps to obtain precise information if we knew what year that 225 is. -
