I have a MY 2000, 35 HP Johnson OB (Model J35TEL3SSB) that will cold start and run just fine for a short period of time and then just die off like someone switched a key. After a period of about 20 minutes it will start again and run for a short time and repeat (die). When this happens, I confirmed that there is no spark on all 3 cylinders.
I've checked the following;
a) Head Temperature switch is operating properly.
b) Oil tank float switch is operating properly.
c) There doesn't appear to be any loose wires for I have moved them with the motor running and it doesn't have any affect.
d) The connectors all seem to be fine. They were all unplugged and plugged back in with no ill effects.
e) We checked half of the Stater trigger circuit and got readings of 800 ohms and 60 ohms with no shorts to ground. We did not check the other portion of the stater because I didn't have a flywheel puller.
f) I don't believe that it's a coil issue because when it dies, there isn't any spark on all 3 cylinders
I recently removed the oil mixing unit at the bottom of the oil tank and am mixing gas and oil but I don't think this should be causing this issue. I store oil in the tank just to satisfy the float sensor circuit.
Also, the engine did overheat prior to this condition due to a bad water pump but now that it's fixed it runs great while the ignition is delivering spark to the spark plugs.
I'm narrowing it down to the electronic Power Pack or the Stater but leaning more towards the Power Pack. I wanted to get some opinions before spending $300 + on a new one.
Thanks for the input!
