  • 1992 60 hp fuel issues

My 60 hp long shaft was in storage for approximately 10 years. It starts and runs fine until the carbs run out of fuel. Will run as long as the fuel ball is being pumped. Checked and replaced weathered fuel lines. Bought new fuel tank and gas hose ends. Thought it must be letting air in somewhere.
Is there a fuel pump that may be malfunctioning? Not sure why it won't stay primed.

The 1992 60hp Evinrude/Johnson (unless you've converted it) would have a VRO pump that pumps gasoline and also oil from a separate tank.

If it's been converted to where you mix the oil with the gas, it may still have a VRO that is using just the gas side of the pump... OR... a smaller fuel pump provided.

At any rate, whichever pump you may have, it appears that it needs replacing.

This problem could also be caused by a bad fuel leak at some point between the pump and the fuel supply (fuel leaks, pump draws air) BUT if that exists, you didn't mention it... there should have been a strong gasoline smell if this was the case.

Is this engine new to you, inherited, whatever? No offense intended but it sounds like you know nothing about the engine and should this be the case, you should ask for advice from someone experienced in the Evinrude/Johnson outboard line in order to avoid expensive oversights.

Sitting for ten (10) years... I'm amazed that the carburetors aren't fouled.

When the fuel supply problem is corrected.... should the engine dies out when throttle is applied.... think fouled, clogged carburetors.
