Just bought a 16' Cobia center console with a 70 hp Johnson model J70TLCRD that's been sitting for a few years. Problem #1 is that it won't idle. Fixed a broken tube where the hose connects to the base of one carburetor but it didn't help. The manual says that there are no idle speed adjustments so I'm guessing that the carbs need to be cleaned out. Also when I start the motor with a garden hose attached, there is no water coming out of the pee hose. Should it pump water right away or does the thermostat have to open first? Thanks, Keith

Probably needs carbs removed and cleaned, running on water hose is not a good way to see if water pump is pumping ok, needs to be in water.

70 hp fuel pump
My repair manual arrived today and I found that a no idle problem can be caused by a bad fuel pump. I took the pump apart and found that one of the reed valves are broken. I was going to order a repair kit but it doesn't show that the valves are included. Does anyone know the part # for a replacement pump? The original # is no longer available. Is it possible to install an electric pump? The repair manual states that the pressure should be a minimum of 1 psi at idle and 2.5 psi at 4500 rpm. The gas tank is in the bow of my boat so would it be feasible to mount a pump there and have it pump to the engine? Thanks, Keith. Motor is an 84 J70TLCRD 2 stroke

The primer bulb is used to get the fuel to the fuel pump. The electric pump will not likely eliminate the need for the primer bulb.
