I would like to install a water Temp gauge to my 1987 Jonson 70 horse,What will I have to do?

I bought the gauge along with a few other items from the shop,I just now got to look at my stuff and saw the temp gauge was already showing 130 degrees,Should the gauge be at 0 or will it reset when I put power to the gauge?
