  • Johnson 50hp trim/tilt restoration

    Hi,

I'm working on restoring this boat with a 50hp Johnson outboard (model BJ50PLSSM, year 2000) and I've finally got all engine functions working again, and the last thing to fix was the trim/tilt system. The boat itself has trim/tilt switches, and the outboard has the electronics for the electric trim/tilt system (I can hear the relais click when I press the up/down button). However, there is no cable that runs from the engine to the trim/tilt cylinder, which I assumed was removed by the previous owner after the trim/tilt stopped working.

So I got the boat out of the water and was surprised by what I found below the waterline. The cylinder attached doesn't seem like it has any motor or other electronics in it, and it doesn't seem to match either the "Power Trim & Tilt" or the "Tilt Assist Cylinder" diagrams I got from boats.net (see the photos and diagrams below). It also has this weird welded handle on it, which makes me think the previous owner of the boat has been working on this himself.

So, long story short, does anyone here recognize this cylinder? I would love to know what it is, and what my options are for restoring Power Trim & Tilt on this boat.

      Thanks for looking into this!

That is a power assit unit not a power trim unit, probably from a different model and made to work on your motor.
