  • 1976 vs 1979 Johnson 70hp Impeller Assemblies

Hey there, new to the forums and feel like I'll be on here more often than I thought.

    We've recently purchased a 1989 Vanguard Calais 15.5' w/ a 1976 Johnson 70 Outboard motor.

The motor is almost flawless and runs like a top with the exception of the previous owner who neglected it.
After finding out the motor overheats, we've torn the lower unit apart and found the impeller destroyed, and the plastic housing surrounding it bubbled out like it was running for some time without any water being sucked into it. So, with a quick hunt on Amazon, we managed to find the part we needed (or so we thought).

After having a look at Crowley Marine's parts diagrams, the 1979 impeller has a different "key stock" cut-out than the 76, links for reference to the impellers.

    1976: https://www.crowleymarine.com/johnso...arts/43238.cfm

    1979: https://www.crowleymarine.com/johnso...arts/43639.cfm

But, whilst looking through the Amazon product we ordered, the entire impeller assembly (impeller included) matches both motors' part numbers identically, but the impeller we received in the kit looks to be from a 79 and newer, link for reference: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My grand question is, can we still use this impeller that was included in the kit? or will we have to purchase the "proper" impeller. I know, "don't trust Amazon product descriptions" but the part numbers for the entire impeller assembly are IDENTICAL on the Crowley Marine website, and these are the part numbers we went off of when purchasing.

Here is a 79 and newer impeller (note the more "lobed" style key stock hole):

And here is a 1976 and older key stock (note the more traditional-style key stock hole):
Now I know impellers are cheap and can be purchased in mass, but it's frustrating when a part number is IDENTICAL to the one you need, and the parts included are WRONG.

    Thanks in advance.
