Johnson 110 won't stay in gear...

Johnson 110 won't stay in gear and the gas throttle has to be almost wide open before it will jump into gear. Can anybody help me figure out what's causing this problem?

Check for loose play in cables and cable adjustment at engine. Check lower unit oil for water or metal in oil, may have damage inside gearcase.
