  • 74 Johnson 15 - dead ignition

My 74 Johnson 15 ran fine when I last used it about two years ago. I went to start it the other day and there is no spark to either plug. Mice had been living in the motor at some time or other. I checked the wiring and everything seems to be okay (except for the residual odor). I removed the two coils mounted to the cylinders and cleaned the wiring contacts. I pulled the flywheel also and everything looks okay. I'm suspecting the drive coil but the manual doesn't give much detail as how to check it and I'm not the greatest on electrical stuff. Anybody have an idea? thanks

Disconnect the stop switch switch and recheck spark to see if stop switch is bad. The charge coil should be between 800-1000 ohms between brown and brown/yellow wires. Should be a high ohm reading between brown and black wire and same between brown/yellow and black wire.

      74 Johnson - dead ignition

boats.net - thank for the reply.

I got it running. The driver coil and kill switch checked out okay. I went over all the connections and ground wires, etc. with a wire brush and re-contacted everything and dressed the points. I'm not really sure what did it but cleaning all the connections did the trick. It's running perfectly. Thanks again for the help.
