  • Outboards and freezing weather

I will soon be moving to a place on the river that is accessed only by water. My boat will remain in the water year round. We sometimes see temps in the lower teens and 20's. Is there any concern for the outboard or does the water drain from the block when it is shut down? I have run motors in the winter but never had one that was in the water overnight during freezing temps.
    Thanks, Jeff

It would need to be trimmed down in order for water to drain out of engine block. If it's on a lift where boat will be raised out of water then store it in trimmed down position so water drains out of gearcase as well, if stored with boat in water then water will be trapped in gearcase if trimmed up so may have to leave trimmed down in water to keep from freeze damage to gearcase.

Thanks, being trimmed down is just opposite of what I usually see around here. Most folks leave their motors tilted all the way up.
